About the Program
Friends of Local Foods was formed in the fall of 2006 to bring concerned students, faculty, and community members together to raise awareness, create academic opportunities and conduct research related to local food systems and food quality. Out of this effort, with the support of several members of the MSU community, grew the Towne's Harvest Garden project, a 3 acre diversified vegetable farm.
Towne's Harvest Garden not only produces vegetables, it is the start of a larger project that promotes community building and individual empowerment. Our goal is that the THG farm will be seen as a place of valuable hands-on education for the entire Bozeman community. It will promote learning about food production and the value of eating and supporting local foods.
MSU folks and community members are very welcome to visit and volunteer at the garden. Volunteers will be rewarded for their efforts by stress reduction through physical work, joyful camaraderie and free vegetables. Email us to be notified of volunteer dates and times.
Why Towne’s Harvest?
The name of the garden connects the history of the land to the present. Towne is the surname of one of five farmers who used to own land which was eventually deeded to MSU. The land where the Horticulture Farm and the Towne’s Harvest Garden is located has been nicknamed Towne’s farm for several decades. The piece of land which became the garden actually belonged to E. Broox and the Ella Martin Farm. It was deeded to MSU in 1909.
As a student group and a part of MSU, we will continue to be good stewards of that farm so that future generations of Montanans can grow food on this land.
About CSA
CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. CSAs are vegetable subscriptions which directly support a farmer or a farming group in the community. Community members pay a set amount for a season’s worth of produce, and then receive a bag of vegetables each week. CSAs are a great way to build relationships with your produce growers: you know exactly where your food is coming from and you will see how it is grown. In this case, your purchase of a CSA share will also support student initiative and interest in local and sustainable food.
Towne’s Harvest is a educational research farm. Therefore, we greatly value member’s involvement and feedback as we try to create a model for small scale producers in the state.
Towne’s Harvest Garden offers a 13 week CSA program from June 25 to Sept 17, 2009. We are offering two share sizes, a Grande size and Venti size. The Grande Share will provide
weekly produce for 4 people, and the Venti share will be sized for 2 people. There are a total of 40 memberships available.
Shares will include numerous types of produce including peppers, potatoes, carrots, cilantro, basil, parsley, onions, tomatoes, green beans, peas, broccoli, salad mix squash and more!
In addition to a weekly bag of fresh produce, your CSA membership will include reusable tote bags, a Montana Food Guide ($25 value), and weekly newsletters with information about the farm, nutrition facts about the vegetables in the share, and recipes. The produce will be available for pick-up at the farm Thursday from 4-6pm.
Members are very welcome to visit Towne’s Harvest or come to volunteer and community events.
